The young women at LA Unica in focus!

September 14, 2009

When it comes to Africa, its best to adress the women. There are many great women and one especially known in the world from Kenya is Wangari Maathai Her example of steadfastness in her mission has given hope to many women in Kenya and the world. I salute women who take pride in being women and do what they can to make their part of the world a better place. cultural

There are many young women at La Unica Child care centre, Lusigeti, Kenya who find hope and strength at LA Unica. Lets help the Women at LA Unica not only to take life as it comes but to join in La Unica mission to strenghten these individuals to believe in themselves and a better world.

“Dedicated to Hans family and friends” David at La Unica

August 1, 2009

”I really find this man David and his wife Catherine to be true heroes…. They are the leaders of LA Unica, childcare centre, Lusigeti and are fighting for the education of 197 children… where 38 are orphans enroll for free.” Greetings Pappa HANS

photo1davidsfamilyLots of greetings from David and family.  Hope you are all right from the other side of the globe.

Us we are fine trying hard to make ends meet.

Happy because we receive your gift.  Pass our regards to all who made that effort.  Everyone is happy including our friends-congratulations God Bless you all.  Slow response though- but my father passed away this very month-already buried.  Sorry to say so.  This world is not our home.
Find the whole family in the photo, from right standing:- Andrew, Gerald, myself and Catherine.  Seated is the youngest baby then Purity and Charity.  Big family, you see:  However we received other presents later and we have done the staffroom-almost through-photo to be sent when complete.
May you have a nice time with all, continue with your togetherness and may God Double your loving Spirit.
 From: David and Family.”

My reply:

Hello my friend… (please print this so Catherine can read it as well) dont worry about the silence… life goes on here as well… luckily enough noone has died though…

I have taken the privilige of putting your nicely put letter on the blogg… people here are so far away of understanding even me is having a hard time understanding things… even though I have been visiting you…

I really love the names charity and Purity… what´s the babys name =)

Every day while I have been painting my house I have thought of Kenya and you. I really left a big portion of me in your country… I try and do my best to do what I can… Always fall short though… Every litre of paint…. It really bugs me… I will continue to encourage my students to have you at La Unica in mind during their schoolprojects… I have vowed to keep the bridge open.. and that I can do… I saw so much poverty in Kenya that it almost broke my heart… hope you will continue to send good pictures and never give up…. I will continue to ask and not give up… the best thing is if I could find a company that would take LA Unica under its arms (lets say 150 USD amonth) and get goodwill from it… having their logo next to yours… on a new painted school house… that is my vision for what I hope to be able to give you eventually…

God bless you both David and Catherine and all your great kids… Great the kids at LA Unica from me and give all the mothers in the women group…

Hugs from HANS

PS: I read the letter to my wife… My wife says that my vision might sound as a promise…. I know you understand the meaning of “vision”… You have drawn me a map of your vision of LA Unica and given it to me…. hoping that your vision one day will come true… so it is with my vision, knowing that it might not be, but we need to have a vision… … “without visions the people perish”… I need to exercise some faith in my vision as you have done in yours…

Pics from La Unica Child Care centre

April 29, 2009

kidslaunicaLa Unica is a school for those with no or small money. Orphans enroll for free (38 last yr), children with one parent pay 2 dollars per month and those with both parents alive pay 4 dollars per month. These money is divided between the teachers, schoolbooks, administration and school investments. There ar up to 10 people in the staff that works here for hardly no pay. Symbolic pay…. about 25 dollars per month each. This money covers for example housing but not food… the teachers are unemployed and are also looking for steady work… meaning they need to go to the city on a regular basis and the cash they get from La Unica is used for these purposes and clothing. Teachers in Kenya look respectable and are required to do so. To be able to go about as described above, the teachers live in the neighborhood with friends or relatives, eating what comes from the family gardens (shambas).

Rerun from last years birthday gifts?

February 26, 2009

flowerstokenyaLast year turning 40 I asked my guests to bring “Flowers to Kenya” only. A great success! La Unica staff handled the money with excellence and concrete toilet/latrine were built on the schoolground. Thank you all! Its time again!

The target for the donations depend on the total amount. My main target is to provide a scholarship for someone I know in Kenya with a need, but of course if larger amounts is donated all will go to La Unica for a specific project, maybe a fishpond or a 7th school house…. I do not know all you readers out there in this global world…  Go ahead, make their day…

Please feel safe to donate!

Watch… and compare with La Unica…

If you were pleased with the message and vision of La Unica people, you can always compare with a great school project in another part of Kenya.
I do not have the resources Rotary have but the spirit of “paying things forward” is the key to everything. Maybe you feel like contributing to this cause.  same

Teachers at La Unica

February 5, 2009

dscn4234 The teachers are priceless for LA Unica children.

The children that do not have a future without an education get a possible future thanks to these teachers.

Who are they? Educated in college or university. The number of paid jobs in Kenya is in general very few.

These people work at La Unica while looking for paid job. They live in the neighborhood with parents or relatives who support them with housing and food from their kitchen gardens. Most people in Kenya live of what they can grow on their small landplots. The teachers get a small amount of money monthly equivalent to 10 days on a manual labor job (20 USD). This money they need when they look for paid job… (Bus-ticket to town and back, almost 3 dollars, 1 hour drive)

Do you think that it sounds like an impossible situation… Many unemployed highly educated people? Well, what choice do they have? No cash but the “bus-ticket money” from La Unica. They are very humble (teachable). How about you?

I support LA Unica through this blog and have a regular contact with the executive director. Read and watch the last 6 months progress on La Unica (lincs to the right). Please find us trustworthy of your sponsorship.

The latrine built with my great Swedish friends money

January 29, 2009

davidslaunicatoday Take a good look up in the left corner…. it says “B. Toilet”…. David, shown in the film is step by step fullfilling his vision of LA Unica.

You can help them improve LA Unica childcare centre to become something even more than it is.

They are eager to build a fishtank (400 USD), for extra income to the school. as of today there is no electricity (800 USD)

The best about my friend David and his team is that they never give up!

Watch the short movie clip

At my 40th birthday, instead of giving presents that I dont need, they were asked to donate to this cause. I was happy to recieve enough to build the latrine (2800 SEK, 350 USD). Safe latrine is the start of a better life. What can be better than helping people improve their lives.

LA Unica will be the main target after the two students at Moi

la-unica-001With the same entusiasm the greet visitor as they embark in their schooling.

This picture is taken behind the school. The landscape is dry and they soon need to build a pool to keep water and for fishes to grow to be sold for more funds to the school. You can add to their success!
